as an erstwhile catholic and not one to be particularly ruminant or contemplative, and with deference; beuchner notwithstanding, i read the most fascinating tidbit in Mother Earth News. the money spent so far in our conflict/war in Iraq equals the same amount it would take to not only make the U.S. totally independent of foreign oil, but have our energy sources be 100% renewable. thanks, Condie....thanks Dick.... excellent choice.

i don't understand, damien...is this view a popular one? one embraced by the majority in this country? as if there's a bandwagon of some sanity out there quelling the otherwise aggrresive and somewhat out-of-control group which embraces family values but doesn't have a word to say about killing on a much larger scale? the one thing catholics bring consistently to the table is their total embrace of human rights/family values.

I think that if there's a bandwagon, Mother Earth news is not the vehicle. I think the term "mr bandwagon" is totally misapplied. What holden is attempting to do is show how catholicism, in being vastly separate from the evangelical lunacy that seems to be controlling our country, helps him be more critical of (and more open to criticism of) our administration. The separation of church and state is one of the fundemental tenants on which this nation is founded, and catholics understand this far better than most of our evangelical brethren. So, damien, not only did you fail to grasp the value of the criticism levelled at the present adminitstration, you fail entirely to grasp the purpose of this blog and of holden's philisophical underpinnings, which, it appears to me, consist of healthy cynicism and a trust in something beyond, outside, and superior to any human institution.

damien...the use of "you lost me" seems too passive/aggressive. i think you understand the points only too well and that the argument goes past administration/denomination and more towards trying to have a conversation about what being a Christian is (is this a Christian chair?). the last time i picked up World mag (last month) they were still talking about Bill Clinton..and the fact that Al Gore uses electricity in his house. is that the sort of intellectual weight deflection the "community" wants to carry in their collective knapsack? (sorry, the term dates one doesn't it).
